HIV infection rate higher on circumcised men

According to the latest Zimbabwe Health Demographic Survey (ZHDS 2010/2011), the prevalence rate among the circumcised is 14 percent while that of the uncircumcised is 12 percent.

The HIV prevalence rate among circumcised males between the ages of 15 and 49 in Zimbabwe is higher than that of the uncircumcised males owing to the misconception that circumcision completely shields people from HIV infection.

According to the latest Zimbabwe Health Demographic Survey (ZHDS 2010/2011), the prevalence rate among the circumcised is 14 percent while that of the uncircumcised is 12 percent.

The circumcision status of participants was established during pre-test counselling.

However, the country’s overall prevalence rate for the same age group declined to 15 from 18 percent, according to the same survey.

National Aids Council (Nac) public health officer Dr Blessing Mutede said authorities were concerned about the high rate of infection among the circumcised.

He said it was largely a result of “risk compensation behaviours”.

Most men, after circumcision, harbour the false impression that they have been equipped with an invisible condom, he added.

“It is a worrying development that at a time when we are promoting male circumcision as a preventive measure to combat HIV, we are recording a high prevalence rate amongst the group that has been circumcised largely due to uninformed risky compensation behaviours,” he said.

“Most people forget that being circumcised will only safeguard a person from contracting HIV up to a certain percentage and they are still at a 40 percent risk of contracting the virus.

“What we encourage everyone, circumcised or uncircumcised, is to practise safe sex all the time.”

During the survey, a sample of 5 650 men aged between 15 and 49 were tested for HIV. They were also asked about their circumcision status. The information was, thereafter, used to determine the relationship between HIV prevalence and circumcision.

The World Health Organisation recommends circumcision for HIV prevention in “generalised epidemic settings” where prevalence of the virus is high and male circumcision is low.

Zimbabwe embraced the recommendation and anticipates that it will prevent 42 percent of all new infections between 2015 and 2025 if 80 percent of males in the country are circumcised. The country also hopes to reduce HIV prevalence to about 7 percent, in addition to other benefits.

The country has carried out about 70 000 circumcisions since the programme began in 2009.

Experts claim the procedure can reduce HIV infection risk, in part because of physiological differences that decrease the susceptibility to infection among circumcised men.

Our Ministry of Health and our Health Departments are letting the people down because of making decision based on WHO assumptions based on the face value of a report by a researcher who if they had researched about would have seen that he had preconceived notions. He is known to have been advocating for circumcision prior to them giving him the responsibility to carry out this research .

We keep saying that there is something wrong with "research" that does not reflect reality. Even in 2006, it was a known fact that HIV was more prevalent in CIRCUMCISED MEN in 10 out of 18 countries, according to USAID. America has higher HIV transmission rates than countries in Europe and Asia that do not circumcise. Circumcision is a waste of precious funds and resources, not to mention it is a disservice, because it gives people a false sense of security. This is why you see the rates in Zimbabwe you are seeing today. But what will be the solution? "Spend more money on circumcision!" IDIOTS!

Quoting Ladyjade:
How gullible is the WHO anyway? They had to admit their recommendation on a 15%or lower csection rate was based on basically NO evidence, just the random opinion of ONE GUY. sheesh. After this they should have no credibility left whatsoever.

I think you'll find they didn't, the press reported it wrongly (quelle surprise!)

A 40% reduction in the per coitus rate of infection as found by the research does not cause a 42% drop in new infections.

Although the probability of getting HIV from each sex act may be reduced by 40%, the probability of infection remains 100% if you practice unsafe sex often enough for long enough.

So the question really is what value is added by the circumcision?

To say the cutting should continue despite this evidence is simply crazy.

And to assign the cause of the observed HIV rates to peoples' thoughts on circumcision and HIV susceptibility is also crazy. The behaviors that led to these numbers were in place long before the circumcision campaigns began. In half of African nations it is the CIRCUMCISED who have markedly HIGHER incidence of HIV.

There are powerful forces at work with a mission to circumcise as many men in the world as possible. HIV was a godsend to them. Once again it is the US that is behind this mission to impose it's warped and misguided agenda upon those who are eager to be led to salvation. Circumcision is not the answer.

Its time people realize that circumcision is not fool proof. Most people quote North African countries or Arab countries be be having low HIV prevalence rates. This is true but the question is; Is it a result of circumcision alone? Its a whole life style attitude. People need to take responsibility and be faithful when it comes to sex. Test for HIV before committing to marriage Christians included. If you marry without testing for HIV then use a condom the rest of your marriage life. Parents lets boldly teach our children to abstain from sex and wait for marriage. The money wasted on circumcision could be used on improving access to health in most impoverished African nations.

The best way to prevent HIV is to say no to any risky behaviour. HIV is preventable if we can all take responsibility.

I read that Japan has the lowest HIV rate.....and that Japan is a non circumcising nation. That should make people think, how can circumcision be the answer? By that same logic, why would the U.S. have had such a high HIV rate and circumcised men dying of Aids....IF circumcision was truly a preventative measure? Where is the common sense???

indeed circumcision is imperative if we are to reduce the the HIV prevalence in Africa, this has been proven in the lower prevalences of HIV in North A frica were the scurge is minimal.Notwithstanding the other advantages associated to prevetiopn of the transmission of the HPV virus, thus we should not be myopic to associate the risk gap to failure of the long known procedure but rather compasatory behaviour which make people misbehave and forget that MALE CIRCUMCISION IS NOT 100 percent safe.Further, if it means riding in the percent deference to protect even person from cotracting HIV,then is is still a milestone in the fight.hence circumcision should not be ruled as a viable tool to prevent even one person form cotracting the virus.Afterall HIV is about numbers.

+19 #12 Circumcision doesn't prevent HIV!Lynn 2012-07-10 03:45
When are people going to accept that cutting off part of your penis will not protect you from HIV? Only condoms can and this statistic shows that uncircumcised men are practicing safer sex than their circumcised counterparts. It shows that education is what is central to preventing the spread of HIV. So many men are under the impression that circumcision will protect them that all circumcision is going to do for Africa is increase the STD rates. If you still have to wear a condom regardless of whether or not you're circumcised, what's the point of getting circumcised? Condoms don't work better because a man is circumcised.

Ron Low is right. The figures were similar - circumcised 16.6% HIV+, non-circumcised 14.2% HIV+ - in 2005, before the circumcision campaign began, according to USAID So it has nothing to do with changed behaviour.

A group of American researchers with a history of promoting circumcision set out on a deceptive campaign to validate a cultural (and financially lucrative) practice, trashing the honerable traditions of science and exploiting a desperate and vulnerable people along the way.

The Africans should have never allowed these charlatans into their countries to advance their agendas. The best they can do now, is abandon the misguided and dangerous circumcision programs and alert the world to the scientific fraud and human rights abuses carried out by this group of Americans, who are surely now working on a new strategy to validate circumcision, as the case around HIV/AIDS collapses like a house of cards.
