Robert Mugabe’s decision to erect Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo’s statue in Harare’s Karigamombe Centre has been branded as mockery and insult by the late hero’s daughter, Thandiwe Nkomo, The Zim diaspora can reveal.

Speaking in Bulawayo, Thandiwe said Mugabe’s decision was not only an “insult and mockery” to the Nkomo family, but to the people of Matabeleland and the nation at large.

She said the decision was immature and very mischievous given that the country was trying to heal wounds of yesteryear.

The family said it would lobby and petition the Government to have the statue relocated “so that our father’s soul can rest in peace”.

Nkomo, the founding leader of ZAPU - his statue is set to be erected near Karigamombe Centre in Harare and work is already under way.

PF-Zapu’s symbol was and still is a charging bull yet Karigamombe is a Shona word which means the one who fells a cow or bull.

Thandiwe, said the family felt that the name Karigamombe had the connotations of the supposed defeat of PF-Zapu and its leader Dr Nkomo.

“The location chosen in Harare at Karigamombe Centre for the Nkomo statue tarnishes all the good work that was put towards this project by a lot of people. It is a choice made in a very bad taste,” she said.

“It has turned this whole event into a mockery and an insult not only to the Nkomo family but to the whole nation and particularly people of Matabeleland and PF-Zapu supporters and all those who believe in what the late Father Zimbabwe stood for.

“This is an honour gone wrong and an honour given in bad faith.”

The family said Dr Nkomo played a critical role in the country’s liberation and the creation of unity and peace and therefore deserves to be honoured.

The family, however, said there were more appropriate locations for the statue to be erected than Karigamombe Centre.

It said those who made the decision should be ashamed of their actions.

“To those men and women who gathered in all their God-given wisdom and came up with the decision to locate the Harare statue at Karigamombe Centre, we say to them ‘shame on you all for scheming to turn what should have been a happy event into a very painful one for a lot of people around the country’,” she said.

“To those former PF-Zapu people who sat in that room and allowed this absurdity to take place, we say to you do not forget that it was mostly Dr Nkomo’s personal sacrifices and hard work that made it possible for you to occupy your current positions of high office. We all owe him a lifetime of gratitude, not scheming and planning useless and irrelevant endeavours.”
