POLICE in Harare have arrested a deacon with the Seventh- Day Adventist Church for allegedly raping a disabled member of his congregation.

The church leader (41), who cannot be named to protect the victim, was arrested after a police report was made soon after the crime. He, however, denies the charge.
Last week the deacon appeared before a Harare Magistrates’ Court facing one count of rape. It is understood the accused, who is in charge of the church’s sewing project, visited the 29-year-old woman on the night of May 13 this year.
He allegedly entered her house under the pretext that he had brought her some clothes to mend. After exchanging salutations, he allegedly scratched her palm before caressing her thighs.
He then whispered softly into her ear. The complainant, however, fell as she tried to push the deacon away.
The deacon advanced and raped her once before leaving for his house. A police report was made later, leading to his arrest.
In another reported rape case, a 14-year-old Harare girl who went on a beer drinking spree after sneaking out of her parents’ house was allegedly raped by two men who had coerced her to go for a drink.
The two men are now facing charges of raping a minor.
According to the State, one of the alleged rapists telephoned the girl on the evening of November 21. The minor subsequently sneaked out of the house at around 10pm and scaled the security wall.
The accused, who was waiting outside the yard, allegedly took her on a drinking binge around the city. At one time she challenged a patron in one of the bars they visited to a drinking competition.
At around 1.30am, the second accused is said to have suggested that they take the minor back home. She, however, refused, saying she was too drunk to climb over the security wall at her house.
The men then took her to the first accused’s house where the girl alleges the two took turns to rape her. In the morning, the second accused is said to have again suggested they drive her home but she refused.
She only left three days later.
The two accused persons, who are denying the charges, last week appeared in court where they were remanded out of custody.
A doctor’s report revealed that the girl had had sexual intercourse.
