Zimbabwean police have stormed into a house belonging to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai under the pretext that they were looking for arms stolen from the police or the army, it has been confirmed.
At the time of going on Press, the whereabouts of the Prime Minister could not be ascertained last night.
MDC Secretary-General Tendai Biti confirmed the raid by heavily armed police officers who said they were looking for firearms.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Harvest House today, Mr Biti who is also the MDC secretary-general, said the police broke into the house at 9 pm last night and started assaulting an MDC employee, Moffat Nyandure who guards the house.Moffat Nyandure, his wife Netsai Pfudza and son Moffat jnr.
"They conducted the raid under the pretext that they were looking for arms stolen from the police or the army," said Mr Biti who is also Zimbabwe's finance minister.
He said they ransacked every room and took a bunch of valuable party material from a room occupied by organising secretary Morgan Komichi.
Tsvangirai was yesterday accused by President Robert Mugabe of failing to act in the national interest after withdrawing his support for the country's fragile unity government.
Tsvangirai's MDC said earlier this month that it would no longer co-operate with Mugabe's Zanu-PF. The move is in protest at the renewed detention on terror charges of the Prime Minister's aide, Roy Bennett.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in South Africa has come out to say a favourable exit strategy for Mugabe is the only way he will relinquish power. The DA says such a strategy should guarantee him and his generals immunity from prosecution.
Zimbabwe's police spokesperson Wayne Bvundzijena says they will investigate the raiding of a house belonging to the leader of the country's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai.
Nothing was discovered and the police left. However, before leaving they took with them the search warrant they had produced and valuable party documents belonging to deputy national organising secretary, Senator Morgen Komichi.
Senator Morgen Komichi’s room that was ransacked by police.
“The long history of Zanu PF of planting weapons and pressing charges of treason are age old, tired, tactics of the Zanu PF dictatorship, but they must know that this is a serious attack on our movement and we will not back down”, said Mr Biti.
He said Zanu PF and the State machinery had a long history of raiding and planting incriminating evidence but he assured the people of Zimbabwe that the MDC remained resolute in its fight against the Zanu PF dictatorship.
He said the MDC is a peaceful party and would never use weapons of war but would use the Constitution for free and fair elections to bring in a democratic Zimbabwe and real change to the people of Zimbabwe.
The MDC believes that this raid is a result of the party’s decision made last week to disengage from Zanu PF until all outstanding issues stalling the inclusive government are resolved.
‘These acts of harassment are an attempt to intimidate us but we will not be intimidated and our disengagement will not be reversed until outstanding issues in the GPA are resolved,” Mr Biti said.

Most Zanu were seeking protection and positions from the MDC but Tsvangirai wasted the opportunity and ended up legitimising and soliciting for Mugabe saintfication.
Once YOU MDC have made up your minds, call together all Zimbabweans who want to see Zanu gone. Seek a coalition to get Mugabe out and after that we continue in our different political parties.
What you MDC need to understand is that not all who hate Zanu like the MDC, and that number is not small. It is only intelligent to humble your arrogant selves and harvest the support of these people to make Mugabe history.
Stop allulating for a slice of bread if you could own the whole bakery.

This is not only a violation of the journalism profession, but a highly unethical mischief.
I will not be surprised in a few minutes my comment will have been deleted. But alas, I have kept a bandwidth log that I will use before the council!
