Morgan Tsvangirai is like Mugabe: Job Sikhala

E-mail Print PDF

Staff Reporter
FIREBRAND Zimbabwean politician Job Sikhala has castigated MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai for controversially amending the party's constitution to prolong his party leadership, a development which he says likened him to perennial dictator Robert Mugabe.

Sikhala was reacting to reports than Morgan Tsvangirai successfully amended the party's constitution to allow him stay longer as supreme leader of the MDC-T. These developments come only three months after President Mugabe was also endorsed as supreme leader of ZANU-PF, allowing him to continue leading despite his advanced age of 85.

Sikhala who now leads a third breakaway of the MDC after falling away with deputy Prime Minister Aurthur Mutambara, said the amendment of the main MDC constitution did not reflect the very ldeals of democracy under which the party was founded.

H
e said such a development was a total deviation and betrayal of people of Zimbabwe who have remained loyal to the MDC despite gross abuses and harrassment by President Mugabe.

Sikhala who is Tsvangirai's former defence secretary said: “I read about it in the media. I have tried to get some official position from the top but its not forthcoming. It is very confusing as it is, and very sad indeed. I hope it did not  happen at all. If it happened, then we are slowly turning into a new Zanu”

"In 1980 we all blindly followed Mugabe as he kept on changing the constitution. Instead of restraining Mugabe, we all chanted ZANU-PF slogans as such Mugabe took us for granted. Today, we are the same people who have turned around, too late though to realise what kind of a monster we have created in Mugabe," he said.

"Zimbabweans should try and prevent such things from happening again. I feel the MDC-T has abandoned its founding principles which we had all agreed upon in 1999. There is no excuse in that. Its very sad to see Tsvangirai marching in the same footsteps of Robert Mugabe. " he said.

"I am appalled because the party did not follow proper procedures in amending the constitution as required, and, yet, no one seems to be standing up to stop this madness. The MDC is slowly sliding into another ZANU-PF" he said.

"I fear that the MDC-T is now deviating from the founding principles which distinguishes it as a new order different from Zanu-PF.," Sikhala said.

He added that, after such an "unfortunate" development, it was going to be difficult to distinguish the MDC from ZANU-PF.

“If it is true that the constitution was changed overnight, then we have deviated from the fundamentals upon which the party was formed. It is an extremely sad development” he said.

Sikhala claimed that the amendment was done by a few MDC-T officials close to the Prime Minister Tsvangirai.

Many of the MDC-T MPs expressed shock at the news of the amendment. One of the MPs who requested anonymity said there was a lot of disgruntlement in the senior ranks of the party over to autocratic emendment of the constitution.

"Most of us are really worried because it looks like we are grooming another Mugabe. If one can analysed the rise of President Mugabe from 1980 - how he was praised around the world and even knighted by the British Queen, yet back home he was killing 20 000 Ndebeles without international retraints, its exactly what we are seeing today. Even Tsvangirai was last week in Spain to get his Award yet back home he had autocratically changed the party's constitution in a very unacceptable way," the MP told The Zim Diaspora.

"What are we going to tell our grandchildren, for they will accuse of grooming dictators. Its sad because even the media does not seem to outrightly condemn this as many journalists even fear that exposing Tsvangirai can be risk business in this morden Zimbabwe," he said.

Mazuvamana,

I think you are a very ignorant man. Thats the same perception Mugabe has created in Zimbabwe that he is the only man who can be president of Zimbabwe. Shame, what a low thinker! Everyone was brave, the tortured, some were burnt, the murdered think about those papa.

Zifiso. good article. I however beg to differ a bit. Shaka and Mzilikazi had imbongi, half of the praise poetry if you read it was critique. The imbongi would correct the king where he went wrong. On the other hand you could not correct inyanga/isangoma/umthakathi/moloi/ngaka(Nehanda/Kaguvi) because they would really harm you. As Dzimiri always says, it is what we have to live it because the most evil and feared man is the leader in Shona culture and also one with money is the eldest etc. We Sothos, Vendas etc we are in the minority we just have to sit and watch as they destroy their country unfortunatley the Mat/land people will also suffer though with capable leaders. Unless if we take up arms which i think is not far off.

My sister Margaret Dongo once labelled men in ZANU PF '' Mugabe's wives''. I would like to change this a bit and say ''All Zimbabwean men are Mugabe's wives'' Tsvangirai, Mutambara, Dumiso, Sikhala et.al. all you do is make noise. Mugabe is the only one with balls.

Women of Zimbabwe arise and free this nation. Zimbabwean men have failed to lead us to freedom.

Its so sad to see such an educated nation blindly following politicians like this. In the first place place, you should know that politicians are in politics not to save you but to make money in order to feed their families. Secondly, by blindly supporting a leader who autocratically plays around with the party's constitution to suit his requirements, is very depressing indeed. To me it shows the Zimbabwean political future is very bleak. I fail to understand why is it that Zimbabweans have not learnt anything from countries like the UK. Imagine Gordon Brown changing the constitution in order to remain in power... The whole country would come to a standstill. In short, its lack of civilisation and lack of humanity development, we still live in the Nehanda and Tshaka era, whereby it was taboo to criticise of confront a leader. The problem with Zimbabweans is that we can emotional in love with our leaders and that is why we end up with the Gukurahundi, Murambatsinas etc. For someone to think there was nothing wrong with Tsvangirai changing the constitution, appointing his uncle Makuvise, appointing his first cousin Rev Chisvo boggles my mine. The future will remain bleak varume until we decide to hold our leaders to account of their actions. Thirdly, criticising Tsvangirai should not always mean you are ZANU-PF, at some stage soon after the presidential elections, there was a story on the BBC alleging that Tsvangirai was prone to nepotism, did this mean that BBC were suddenly ZANU-PF?

Job, you are JOBLESS, that's your problem. If you can't be led you can never be a good leader. You are not anywhere near good example to comment on MDC Politics.

Job, bad as he might be and as much as I do not like him, however, on this I beg to agree with him. MDC-T is little Zanu in making and it will mature to be a bigger monster than Zanu. Our biggest problems are the people who are too thick to learn that MDC is the same as ZANU AND THERE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO DID NOT LISTEN WHEN WE TRIED TO WARN THEM ABOUT ZANU.

DENIAL IS EQUAL TO DEATH. AIDS IS A KILLER BUT MANAGEABLE DISEASE. SAME AS CANCER, THOSE WHO SUFFER BUT ARE WILLING TO SEEK MEDICAL AID ON TIME LIVE A NORMAL FULL LIFE SPAN.
HOWEVER SOME CHOOSE TO DENY THAT THEY HAVE THE DISEASE AND THEY DIE UNNECESSARILY.
MOST OF OUR AFRICAN BROTHERS IN POLITICS DO NOT WANT TO BE TOLD TO SEEK ASSISTANCE IN THEIR DISEASED POLITICS.
SAME AS THE VOTERS. THINGS HAPPEN THAT SHOULD NOT AND THE PERPETRATORS KEEP REPEATING BECAUSE THERE IS NO PUNISHMENT TO A LEADER IN AFRICAN POLITICS. ALL THERE IS IS BLIND ALLIGENCE.
IN THE WEST, YOU MESS UP, YOU ARE OUT. EVEN THEIR ECONOMY IS WITNESS THAT POLITICS MUST BE CONDUCTED THAT WAY.
UNLESS WE DIAGNOSE OUR OWN DIESES, WE WILL PERISH.

To be honest, respect of the written constitution in Zimbabwe depends on whether one originates from the north or the West of Africa.

Zimbabweans do not follow blindly like what you did to Robert all these years, despite the fact that everyone knew he was wrong. How many times did he change the constitution to suit his egos and grip to power?

If its true what is said about MDC constitution its wrong regardless of who says it even if is a donkey.

Lets stop worshiping leaders if they are wrong they are wrong.

Many people lost their lives to bring about total change and democracy but not fanika lo

Sikhala has his own party and its ''democratic'' constitution, so why is he referring to Tsvangson's party failures if any. Cde Job we are in a struggle and we do not need this constitution issue to distruct us from the main job of restoring democracy and rule of law. Mugabe has been the first secretary of ZANU from time immemmorial and nobody bothyers about that, but when it comes to the constituion of Zimbabwe of being the president of the republic of Zimbabwe then we get worried, lets wait until Tsvangirai become President then we will start counting the years. Check with Mandela as well 27 years as leader of ANC not president of SA

Though I do not condom dictatorship, I feel Job Sikhala is also power hungry. I remember one prominent Zanu PF Heavy Weight saying that power is so sweet and one can not just relinguish it. Morgan is not an exception, he also likes power the way Job does. However there is need for checks and balances to ensure that such things do not happen. There seems to be no proper and strong policies with regards to tenure of the president in Zanu PF, and Mugabe took advantage of that and today 30 years after independence Mugabe does as he wishes, despite the fact that there are "strong" and "vibrant" politicians like Sikhala present. If Sikhala did not want Morgan to turn into another Mugabe he was supposed to remain in the ship and play his part to ensure that MDC sticks to its founding principles. Now because he was not happy in the MDC, a project that he is one of the founding members, I find it very stupid to refer himself and the rest of the MDC-T members as "we". My bra, know where you stand and support those values and ethics that you believe in, this "unsure" political stance that you are taking will not take you anywhere... You will be a political failure if you dont realise it now!!!!!!!!!
