Delay is illegal: Biti
Zimbabwe's main opposition party rejected a delay in a run-off presidential election on Thursday and called for an urgent meeting of the regional SADC grouping to discuss a post-election crisis.
"We would like to express our great outrage at that disregard of Zimbabwe's laws and the people's will," Movement for Democratic Change Secretary General Tendai Biti told a news conference in Johannesburg.
Zimbabwe's electoral commission said on Wednesday the run-off would be delayed, possibly until the end of July -- some four months after the disputed March 29 elections.
Biti said the delay was illegal and a ploy by the ruling ZANU-PF party to buy time. He said his party insisted on a run-off by May 23, in line with laws which say the vote has to come within 21 days of the election results announced on May 2. Reuters
